Glass

Craftsmanship

The use of glass in arts and crafts is rich and varied, encompassing many techniques and crafts. The use of glass goes back thousands of years, with techniques such as molding and glazing used as far back as Mesopotamia. Over time, glass craftsmanship has evolved, integrating modern techniques while preserving traditional skills.

Glassblowing involves shaping molten glass using a variety of tools, including ferrets, rods, mallets and molds. Techniques include picking, blowing and pressing. Glassmakers work with different types of glass, including crystal.

Using a blowtorch, the glassmaker works glass tubes or rods to create bottles, beads or sculptures.

By superimposing and fusing, the foundryman can produce bends, glass paste and moulds.

These techniques are complemented by cutting, engraving, painting, gilding, polishing and mirror-working to create functional or decorative objects, such as tableware, lighting fixtures and sculptures, as well as jewelry and decorative items.
